Dantes inferno levels10/22/2023 Heresy is for people who followed anti-Christian philosophies or views, kept in tombs surrounded by flames. Dante sees his political enemy Filippo Argenti, and they argue.Ħ. Wrath is for people who committed anger, most of them perpetually fighting each other in the marshes of the river Styx. Dante doesn’t talk to its inhabitants, except for its gate guardian, the Greco-Roman god Plutus (patron god of wealth, not to be confused with Pluto).ĥ. The inhabitants perpetually fight each other in a high tower. Greed is for people who coveted possessions, including misers and people who spent money frivolously. Dante doesn’t meet famous people here, although he meets a fellow Florentine named Ciacco, and they discuss what will happen to their city (Dante was exiled from Florence for his politics).Ĥ. They live in a swamp with a never-ending frozen rainstorm. Gluttony is for people who indulged in too much food. As punishment, never-ending storm winds tosses the residents back and forth.ģ. Dante meets such inhabitants as Helen of Troy, Paris, Tristan, and Francesca da Rimini (killed by a husband who found her having an affair with his brother). Lust is for people who committed fornication. Other themes (what humanity looks like without grace, references to Dante’s political career) appear throughout the Divine Comedy.Ģ. His greater point is to use the story of a journey from Hell to Heaven as an allegory for the soul’s trip to God (from darkness to light). Dante borrows plenty of images and characters from Greco-Roman mythology for his story. However, the Divine Comedy isn’t his attempt to explain what Hell, Heaven, and Purgatory truly look like. While each of these three books is classic, Inferno has become the best-known.ĭante lived in a pre-Protestant Reformation period where Purgatory was a common Christian belief. In Paradiso, Beatrice guides him through Heaven, with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux taking over the last part of the trip. In Purgatorio, Virgil guides him through Purgatory, with a woman named Beatrice taking over for the last section. In Inferno, the poet Virgil meets the pilgrim in a forest, then guides him through Hell. Written when epics were classified as comedies (happy endings) or tragedies (sad endings), the Divine Comedy describes a pilgrim led by three spiritual guides through three spiritual realms: The epic poem Commedia (dubbed Divina Commedia a generation later, hence the Divine Comedy) is his best-known work. The idea comes from a later work that has hugely impacted how Western Christianity sees Hell, providing many of the standard images we know today. While Revelation 19:20 mentions certain people burning in a lake of fire, which may mean there are special punishments in Hell, the Bible doesn’t describe any levels of Hell. It has remained in print since it was published prior to Dante’s death in 1321, which indicates what an enduring piece of literature it is.You may have heard the idea that are many levels of Hell, depending on what sins people commit and the appropriate punishments. The Divine Comedy is a classic piece of literature that everyone should read at least once. Dante followed the Inferno with Paradise, the last part of the Divine Comedy, in which he finds himself in Heaven. When they emerge on land, they are on the opposite hemisphere on Easter morning.ĭante’s Inferno is a long allegory that is symbolic for the punishment of sin, as well as trying to reach God. When Dante and Virgil reach Satan, they escape Hell by climbing over Satan and going through the center of the Earth. After round four is the center of Hell where Satan resides waist deep in ice. In the ninth circle the souls are stuck in ice, and from round to round the souls are lodged deeper and deeper in ice. Finally, round four is Judecca for Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Christ. The third round is named Ptolomaea after Ptolemy, who betrayed his guests by killing them. Round two is Antenora for Antenor of Troy, who betrayed his community. Round one is Caine, and it is where those who have betrayed their family go. This circle of Hell is divided into four rounds, and is named after people who symbolize the sin for that round. The ninth circle of Hell is guarded by biblical giants, who ring the entire circle.
